"It's time to scrap the political class that led Italy into its current economic morass"—at least, that's Matteo Renzi's campaign message. The 37-year-old mayor of Florence is competing for the leadership of Italy's center-left Partito Democratico (PD). In an interview with La Repubblica, Renzi proclaimed: "È il momento della rottamazione. Senza incentivi."
According to the New York Times, in Stirring Up Stodgy Italy With His Political Style, the term rottamazione "...translates as scrapping, and is most often used when consigning a car to the junk heap." In this case, though, it refers to upending the political order and sweeping the party clean of the old guard.
