Tendopoli

Tuesday June 30, 2009

In April an earthquake in the Abruzzo region of Italy left many residents homeless. Three months later, many still live in large-scale provisional shelter systems provided by the government. There's even an Italian term for these tent cities: tendopoli. The word is coined from tende—tents—and the suffix –poli, meaning "city" (from polis, ancient Greek for città).

Let's hope the tendopoli don't become Tendopoli—that is, a scandal such as Tangentopoli or Calciopoli.
