Poor Art

Friday November 21, 2008

Some would say that poor is what results after buying incredibly over-priced artworks. But in this case, arte povera (Italian for "Poor Art" or "Impoverished Art") was an artistic movement in the 1960's. The term, coined by Italian art critic and curator Germano Celant, was a reference to the fact that any poor man or woman could get involved in the movement. The young Italian artists based in Torino, Milano, Genova and Roma who were part of this movement experimented with nontraditional and politically charged art, and their works were characterized by the use of extremely inexpensive media.

i wonder if the term “arte povera” could also have meant “art for the poor”…art that people w/ little money could afford & enjoy. would it be possible that any of these artists are still painting & might any of them have become famous. i see that they were based in 4 separate cities but were they closely associated w/ each other?
