Attenzione! Italian teachers, students, administrators of Italian language programs, and anyone else who loves la bella lingua.

The College Board Advanced Placement Program, which gives students an opportunity to take college–level courses and exams while still in high school, is developing additional AP courses in a variety of subjects, including Italian. To begin this process and to gauge levels of interest and support, the College Board is surveying AP school principals with a mass–mailing and asking for input for teachers online through the AP Italian Language Feasibility Study.

AP Course Benefits
There are many advantages, both scholastically and socially, for students who take AP courses. According to the College Board, "Students enjoy the challenge of taking AP courses with enthusiastic classmates and teachers; high school faculty find that AP courses enhance their students' confidence and academic interest as well as their school's reputation; and college faculty report that AP students are far better prepared for serious academic work."

One advocate of the AP Program in Italian, Dr. Grace Mannino, explained, "There is an AP program in existence for practically every discipline except Italian. For years, teachers of Italian have complained about this inequity and lack of opportunity of their upper–level high school students."

How To Help
Students: Urge your teachers and principals to respond Yes to the survey, whether printed or online.
High school teachers of Italian: Fill out the AP Italian Language Feasibility Study. It only takes a few minutes.
Principals and administrators: Answer the printed survey sent to your office by the College Board.
Italian language supporters: Forward this article to Italian teachers, students, and administrators of Italian language programs and tell them how urgent it is that they respond to this survey.

A committee of the American Association Teachers of Italian diligently worked on the proposal to institute an AP Italian program. Only with sufficient participation will the advanced placement program be offered to high school students of Italian language.
