EuroStyling With the Euro
There was at least one potentially positive implication in all this numismatic nonsense, and not surprisingly it came from the Italian fashion industry. Italians will need bigger wallets to accommodate euro banknotes. Italian designers are now busy adding new Euro wallets and trousers with larger pockets to their collections. It seems an even sleeker look can be had without all those bulky bills stuffed in various pockets.

Funny Money
As straightforward as it may appear, le nuove monete e le banconote boast all the latest anticounterfeiting security features including a microfilm strip and and an aluminum-backed foil hologram of the euro symbol and note value. If you're traveling to Italy and want to practice paying for goods and services, try Come lo pago in euro. There is a nursery rhyme about the lira for those who are nostalgic about the former national currency. You can also send a timely e-cartoline with the message: Il passaggio dalla lira all'Euro non ti cambiera' la vita!

Sex Change
Europe's money has undergone a gender change. The introduction of a common currency in 12 European countries has far-reaching economic and political effects, but the impact is also grammatical. In most European languages, the name of the currency—including the Italian lira, the Spanish peseta and the German mark—has been a feminine word. But the word "euro" is masculine in most of the languages (in Greek, euro is neuter). According to the EU, the singular and plural of the euro and cent is as follows: l'euro/gli euro and il cent/i cent.
