Italian Verb Conjugations: Portare

Portare is a regular verb of the first-conjugation that means to carry, to bring, to deliver; to take somewhere and to transport; to wear; to support and to hold; to bear or serve; to drive; to carry forward or continue; to yield and to produce consequence. It also means to harbor or hold against.

Having an obvious direct object, it is a transitive verb and it conjugates nearly always with the auxiliary verb avere. It is only used in an intransitive pronominal way as to take oneself somewhere: portarsi.

A Verb of Many Meanings

Here are some sentences to give you an idea of the many uses of portare. An important clarification as relates to the English translation of "taking": As opposed to prendere, which means to take (as in, "The little girl took the little boy's toy," or "I took a cookie"), portare means to take something or someone somewhere or to do something. It implies movement while carrying or bearing something or someone.

Examples:

La ragazza portava in braccio un bambino e un fagotto. The girl carried in her arms a child and a bundle.
Porto il vino alla festa. I am bringing wine to the party.
Domani ti porto i libri. Tomorrow I will bring you the books.
Porto il cane a passeggiare. I am taking the dog for a walk.
La cameriera ha portato i bicchieri in tavola. The waitress brought the glasses to the table.
Il postino ha portato la lettera a Marco. The mailman delivered the letter to Marco.
Oggi piove; meglio portare l'ombrello. Today it will rain: better to take an ombrella.
L'ascensore porta otto persone. The elevator carries eight people.
Il nonno porta malissimo la macchina. Grandfather drives terribly.
La Fabiola porta sempre i capelli corti. Fabiola always wears her hair short.
Questo lavoro ti porterà molto successo. This job will bring you much success.
L'inverno porterà neve quest'anno. Winter will bring snow this year.
Dove porta questa strada? Where does this road lead?
Non ti porto rancore. I don't hate you/harbor hate against you.

Vorrei che tu mi portassi fortuna. I wish you would bring me luck.
Non sono portata a tollerare i soprusi. I am not inclined to tolerate abuses.
Non ha i soldi per portare avanti il progetto. He does not have the money to carry the project forward.
Le tue parole mi portano speranza. Your words bring me hope.

Let's take a look at the conjugation of portare. Remember that with a direct object pronoun in compound tenses, the past participle will have to agree with the gender and number of the object being taken or carried.

Indicativo Presente: Present Indicative

A regular presente of the first conjugation.

Io	porto	Ti porto a cena.	I'll take you to dinner.
Tu	porti	Mi porti a casa?	Would you take me home?

Tu	portavi	Da ragazzi mi portavi sempre a casa col motorino.	As kids you always took me home on your motorbike.
Lui, lei, Lei	portava	Il facchino portava la valigia con noia e stanchezza.	The porter carried the suitcase with boredom and fatigue.

Indicativo Passato Prossimo: Indicative Present Perfect

A regular passato prossimo, made of the present of the auxiliary and the past participle, portato.

Io	ho portato	Ti ho portato a cena perché mi fa piacere vederti.	I took you to dinner because it makes me happy to see you.
Tu	hai portato	Quando mi hai portata a casa, ho lasciato la borsa nella tua macchina.	When you took me home, I left my purse in your car.
Lui, lei, Lei	ha portato	Il facchino ha portato la valigia fino al treno.	The porter carried the suitcase to the train.
Noi	abbiamo portato	Quando abbiamo portato i bambini a scuola, abbiamo visto Franco.	When we took the children to school, we saw Franco.
Voi	avete portato	Quando avete portato via la signora, dove l'avete lasciata?	When you took the lady away, where did you leave her?

Indicativo Passato Remoto: Remote Past Indicative

Io	portai	Quando ti rividi, ti portai a cena da Nilo e ridemmo tanto.	When I saw you again, I took you to dinner at Nilo's and we laughed a lot.
Tu	portasti	Ricordo che quella sera mi portasti a casa col motorino e cademmo.	I remember that that evening you took me home on the motorbike and we fell.
Lui, lei, Lei	portò	Il facchino portò la valigia fino al treno e se ne andò.	The porter carried the suitcase to the train and left.

Voi	avevate portato	Quando avevate portato via la signora malata, era viva?	When you took/had taken the sick lady away, was she alive?

Indicativo Trapassato Remoto: Indicative Preterite Perfect

The trapassato remoto, made of the passato remoto of the auxiliary and the past participle, is a good remote literary storytelling tense. It is used in constructions with the passato remoto.

Io	ebbi portato	Dopo che ti ebbi portata a cena, andammo a passeggiare sul lago.	After I had taken you to dinner, we went to walk along the lake.
Tu	avesti portato	Appena che mi avesti portata a casa, mio padre si svegliò.	As soon as you had taken me home, my father woke up.
Lui, lei, Lei	ebbe portato	Quando il facchino ebbe portato la valigia al treno, la lasciò e si allontanò in silenzio.	When the porter had taken the suitcase to the train, he left it and walked away in silence.
Noi	avemmo portato	Dopo che avemmo portato i bambini a scuola, cominciò a piovere.	After we had taken the children to school, it started to rain.
Voi	aveste portato	Appena che aveste portato via la signora malata all'ospedale, morì.	As soon as you had taken the sick woman to the hospital, she died.
Loro, Loro	ebbero portato	Appena che Daniele e Massimo ebbero portato i funghi, li pulimmo e scoprimmo che erano velenosi!	As soon as Daniele and Massimo had brought the mushrooms, we cleaned them and discovered that they were poisonous.

Indicativo Futuro Semplice: Indicative Simple Future

The futuro anteriore, made of the simple future of the auxiliary and the past participle.

Io	avrò portato	Dopo che ti avrò portato a cena mi ringrazierai.	After I will have taken you to dinner, you will thank me.
Tu	avrai portato	Spero che tra un'ora mi avrai portata a casa.	I hope that in an hour you will have taken me home.
Lui, lei, Lei	avrà portato	Dopo che il facchino avrà portato la valigia al treno, lo ringrazierò.	After the porter will have taken my suitcase to the train, I will thank him.
Noi	avremo portato	Appena avremo portato i bambini a scuola torneremo a letto.	As soon as we will have taken the children to school, we will go back to bed.

The congiuntivo passato is made of the congiuntivo presente of the auxiliary and the past participle.

Participio Presente & Passato: Present & Past Participle

The present participle portante means "bearing" or "carrying" and as an adjective is applied to make things, among them the economy and structures. The past participle portato, used as an adjective, means inclined or predisposed to something.

Portante	Quella è la struttura portante del ponte.	That is the bearing structure of the bridge.
Portato/a/i/e/	Il bambino è molto portato a mentire.	The child is well disposed to lying.

Gerundio Presente & Passato: Present & Past Gerund

The Italian gerundio is used a bit differently from the English gerund.

Portando	Portando a casa il pane sono caduta.	Taking the bread home, I fell.
Avendo portato	Avendo portato i bambini in braccio tutta la strada, la donna era esausta.	Having carried the children in her arms the whole way, the woman was exhausted.
