How to Conjugate the Italian Verb Offrire

The verb offrire means, most obviously, to offer something—or to offer to do something—but also has some more nuanced meanings:

to buy someone a drink or dinner
to propose (a price for something, for example)
to give or afford (a beautiful view, refuge, or shade)
to provide (pay, opportunities, or facilities)

It is an irregular third-conjugation verb in that its past participle is offerto—that alone makes it irregular and it is its only irregularity—and it conjugates much like aprire (to open) and coprire (to cover).

Offrire is a transitive verb, with a direct object, hence it takes the auxiliary avere, with a direct object (I offer something) but also most often an indirect object or indirect object pronoun (I offer something to you). So it is, offrire qualcosa a qualcuno. To offer somebody something.

However, you will also find offrire used in the reflexive when someone, for example, is offering to do something. In those cases, of course, offrirsi is used with reflexive pronouns and essere as the auxiliary:

Mi offro di aiutarti. I offer (myself) to help you.
Giulio si è offerto di insegnarmi l'inglese. Giulio offered to teach me English.
Mi sono offerta di portarlo a scuola. I offered to take him to school.
Mi sarei offerta di portare fuori il cane, ma pioveva. I would have offered to take the dog out, but it was raining.

Indicativo Presente: Present Indicative

In the presente offrire has all the above uses, but when you make friends in Italy you will hear it most often used in the race to see who can buy drinks first, or a coffee. Stasera offro io! Tonight I'm buying! Or, offri te stasera? Are you buying tonight?

Io	offro	Stasera ti offro la cena.	Tonight I am buying you dinner.
Tu	offri	Mi offri un passaggio?	Would you offer to give me a ride?
Lui, lei, Lei	offre	La casa offre una splendida vista.	The house affords a splendid view.
Noi	offriamo	Noi offriamo una bella casa in affitto.	We offer a beautiful house for rent.
Voi	offrite	Voi offrite una pessima paga.	You pay terribly (you offer terrible wages).
Loro, Loro	offrono	Loro offrono buone opportunità di lavoro.	They offer good work opportunities.

Indicativo Imperfetto: Imperfect Indicative

A regular imperfetto, mostly translated as the routine "used to offer" or "used to buy."

Io	offrivo	Ti offrivo la cena ma non hai fame.	I was going to buy you dinner but you're not hungry.
Tu	offrivi	Quando non avevo la macchina mi offrivi sempre i passaggi.	When I didn't have a car you used to always offer me rides.
Lui, lei, Lei	offriva	La casa offriva una splendida vista prima.	Before, the house used to afford a splendid view.
Noi	offrivamo	Noi offrivamo una bella casa in affitto, ma adesso l'abbiamo venduta.	We used to offer a beautiful house for rent, but we sold it.

Indicativo Passato Prossimo: Present Perfect Indicative

As a transitive verb, in the passato prossimo offrire is made of the present tense of avere and the past participle offerto. Remember, that past participle is irregular.

Io	ho offerto	Ieri sera ti ho offerto la cena io; domani la offri tu.	Last night I bought you dinner; tomorrow's your turn.
Tu	hai offerto	Ieri mi hai offerto un passaggio. Sei stato gentile.	Yesterday you offered me a ride; it was kind of you.

Regular passato remoto, the tense of stories from long ago.

Io	offrii	Quella sera ti offrii la cena, ricordi?	I bought you dinner that night, remember?
Tu	offristi	E quella sera tu mi offristi un passaggio.	And that night you offered me a ride home.
Lui, lei, Lei	offrì	Per molti anni la casa offrì una splendida vista, prima che costruissero le case nuove.	For many years, before they built the new housing, the house afforded a splendid view.
Noi	offrimmo	Per dieci anni offrimmo una bella casa in affitto. Poi la vendemmo.	For 10 years we offered a beautiful house for rent; then we sold it.

Indicativo Trapassato Prossimo: Past Perfect Indicative

The trapassato prossimo of offrire is made of the imperfetto of the auxiliary and the past participle offerto. In this tense—another storytelling tense—the act of offering or buying happened in the context of something else also in the past, in memory. It could be remote or not; the important thing is the context of the actions. You had offered to buy me dinner, but it started to rain and ...

Io	avevo offerto	Ti avevo offerto la cena, ricordi? Ma non avevi fame.	Remember? I had offered to buy you dinner, but you weren't hungry.

Indicativo Trapassato Remoto: Preterite Perfect Indicative

The trapassato remoto is not a tense you use much in speaking. It is a remote storytelling tense you will find in literature. Nonetheless, it is made of the passato remoto of your auxiliary and the past participle. It is used in a dependent clause with the passato remoto.

Io	ebbi offerto	Dopo che ti ebbi offerto la cena, ti sentisti male.	After I had bought you dinner, you felt sick.
Tu	avesti offerto	Appena tu mi avesti offerto il passaggio trovai il mio cavallo.	As soon as you had given me a ride, I found my horse.
Lui, lei, Lei	ebbe offerto	Quando la casa ebbe offerto tutta la splendida vista di cui era capace la bombardarono.	When the house had afforded all the splendid views it could give, they bombed it.
Noi	avemmo offerto	Dopo che avemmo offerto la bella casa in affitto per tutti quegli anni ce la bombardarono.	After we had offered that beautiful house for rent for all those years, they bombed it.
Voi	aveste offerto	Dopo che aveste offerto quella misera paga ai vostri dipendenti tutti quegli anni, andaste falliti.	After you had offered your dependents those terrible wages for all those years, you went belly-up.

Indicativo Futuro Anteriore: Future Perfect Indicative

In the transitive mode, the futuro anteriore of offrire is composed of the future of avere and your participle offerto. In this tense, the act of offering will take place in the context of another action in the future.

Io	avrò offerto	A quest'ora domani ti avrò offerto la cena.	Tomorrow at this time I will have bought you dinner.
Tu	avrai offerto	E dopo cena, a quest'ora tu mi avrai offerto un passaggio.	And after dinner at this time you will have offered me a ride.
Lui, lei, Lei	avrà offerto	E a quest'ora dopo cena la casa ci avrà offerto la sua splendida vista.	And after dinner at this time, the house will have afforded us its splendid view once more.
Noi	avremo offerto	A quel punto noi avremo offerto la casa in affitto per venti anni.	At that point, we will have offered the house for rent for more than 20 years.

Congiuntivo Presente: Present Subjunctive

A regular congiuntivo presente of the third conjugation. Remember that often sentences in the Italian congiuntivo do not translate into English subjunctive.

Che io	offra	Vuole che io gli offra la cena.	He wants me to buy him dinner.
Che tu	offra	Voglio che lui mi offra un passaggio.	I want him to offer me a ride.
Che lui, lei, Lei	offra	Spero che la casa offra una splendida vista.	I hope the house affords a splendid view.

Congiuntivo Imperfetto: Imperfect Subjunctive

The imperfetto congiuntivo of offrire is regular. The hoping and wanting and the offering all take place in the past—I hoped that you would offer me a drink—and the tense of the supporting verb is in the imperfetto.

Che tu	offrissi	Volevo che mi offrisse un passaggio.	I wanted him to give me a ride.

In the transitive mode, the congiuntivo passato is made of the congiuntivo presente of avere and the participio passato. The supporting verb—the hoping and wanting—that characterize much of the Italian congiuntivo is in the present tense, but the act of offering or buying is in the past.

Che io	abbia offerto	Odio che io abbia offerto la cena a lui.	I hate that I bought him dinner.
Che tu	abbia offerto	Spero che ti abbia offerto un passaggio.	I hope that he offered you a ride.
Che lui, lei, Lei	abbia offerto	Temo che la casa non abbia offerto una splendida vista.	I fear that the house did not afford a splendid view.
Che noi	abbiamo offerto	Temo che abbiamo offerto in affitto una bella casa per niente.	I fear that we offered a beautiful house for rent for nothing.

Congiuntivo Trapassato: Past Perfect Subjunctive

The congiuntivo trapassato of offrire is composed of the imperfetto congiuntivo of your auxiliary and the past participle. The tense of the supporting verb can be in different past tenses or in the conditional and can be translated into English in a variety of ways.

Che io	avessi offerto	Avrebbe voluto che gli avessi offerto la cena.	He would have wanted me to buy dinner./He wished for me to have offered to buy dinner.
Che tu	avessi offerto	Vorrei che mi avesse offerto un passaggio ma non lo ha fatto.	I wish that he had offered me a ride, but he didn't.

In the negative, of course, remember to put the non in front of the simple infinitive: Non mi offrire niente! Don't get me anything!

Infinito Presente & Passato: Infinitive Present & Past

In the infinitive offrire offers great opportunities to serve as a noun or infinito sostantivato. Offrire da mangiare ai poveri è molto gentile. It's kind to offer food to the poor.

Offrire	Offrirti alloggio è un onore.	It's an honor to offer you a place to stay.
Offrirsi	Sei stato gentile ad offrirti di aiutare.	It was nice of you to offer to help.

As you know, the present participle often serves as a noun: in this case, the person offering something. In Italian, offrente has been supplanted by offerente. Technically it means "the one offering."

Offerente	Gli offerenti hanno pagato.	The offerors paid.
Offerto	Ha offerto di pagare.	He offered to pay.

Gerundio Presente & Passato: Gerund Present & Past

Offrendo	Offrendo una bella vista, la casa è stata comprata velocemente.	Affording a beautiful view (since it afforded a beautiful view), the house sold quickly.
Offrendosi	Offrendosi di aiutare, mi ha detto di chiamarlo.	Offering to help, he asked me to call him.
Avendo offerto	Avendo offerto una bella vista, la casa fu comprata velocemente.	Having afforded a beautiful view (since it afforded a beautiful view), the house sold quickly.
