To Know: How to Conjugate the Italian Verb Conoscere

To Know People, Places, and Subjects

Meeting in a piazza in Italy
Sam Edwards

Conoscere is an irregular verb of the second conjugation that means to have knowledge of something: to be acquainted with a person, a topic, or a matter. It also means to have experienced something and to be familiar with it personally, in a deeper manner than counterpart sapere (which also means to know).

What to Know About Conoscere

Conoscere is a transitive verb and it is followed by a direct object. In compound tenses, with its past participle conosciuto, it uses the auxiliary avere, though, as usual, in the reflexive and reciprocal forms, conoscersi, it uses the auxiliary essere: Mi conosco molto bene (I know myself very well), or, Ci siamo conosciuti a Londra (we met in London). In the reciprocal (and mostly in the passato prossimo) it means to meet someone as well as to know.

While you use sapere to talk about knowing or hearing about something—to have information or be in the know about something—conoscere is used for knowing people and places, and being familiar with subjects in a broader and usually deeper manner. Conoscere is also used to express direct personal experience of something, for example, to have experienced or known pain or hunger: Gli italiani hanno conosciuto la fame durante la guerra (Italians experienced hunger during the war).

While there is some interchangeability between conoscere and sapere, keep in mind that you can only use conoscere for knowing or meeting a person. It behooves to learn the differences between these two widely used verbs.

A Progressive Action

Because the act of knowing is a progressive one (getting to know), in meanings other than meeting someone (which is a finite action) conoscere can be inexact in finite tenses such as the passato prossimo or the passato remoto. It would be preferable to say, Abbiamo avuto modo di conoscere la città molto bene (we had the chance to get to know the city very well) instead of abbiamo conosciuto la città (we knew/met the city), since knowing is a process rather than an open-and-shut action (and better translates to "get to know"). You can also use fare conoscenza (to make acquaintance or get to know), which is deeper than just meeting someone briefly.

Of course, you can add descriptors to your conoscere to define how well you know something or someone: poco (little), pochissimo (very little), bene (well), benissimo (very well), superficialmente (superficially), così (approximately), and meglio (better). Vorrei conoscerti meglio! I would like to get to know you better!

Note, again: In the passato prossimo conoscere is often used to talk about meeting someone (rather than knowing). When talking about the process of getting to know something, a topic or a place, or having the opportunity to get to know something or someone, depending on the context you could use conoscere with arrivare or venire (venire a conoscere), progressive, as in "coming to know."
