Origin: From the Late Latin name Bonifatius, derived from the elements bonum "good" and fatum "fate," bestowed on a child as a hopeful omen. In the early Middle Ages the name came to be alternatively written as Bonifacius and reinterpreted as a compound of bonum and facere or "doer of good deeds."
