Irregular Past Participles
Printer–Friendly Version

Many verbs in Italian, especially the -ere verbs, have irregular past participles. A list of some of the most common infinitives, along with a sample variation, as well as their past participle forms, appears in the table below.

The irregular past participles of many groups of verbs have repeating patterns. For example, the past participle of any verb that ends in -mettere will also end in -messo:

ammettere (to admit, to allow in, to let in)—ammesso
commettere (to commit, to commission)—commesso
dimettere (to dismiss, to remove)—dimesso
omettere (to omit, to leave out)—omesso
rimettere (to remit, to refer)—rimesso

Once you recognize the patterns, you'll be on your way to rapidly becoming an esperto of Italian verbs!
