Ruppemi lalto sonno ne la testa un greve truono, sì chio mi riscossi come persona chè per forza desta;
e locchio riposato intorno mossi,
Vero è che n su la proda mi trovai
Oscura e profonda era e nebulosa10
«Or discendiam qua giù nel cieco mondo»,
«Dimmi, maestro mio, dimmi, segnore»,
«uscicci mai alcuno, o per suo merto
rispuose: «Io era nuovo in questo stato,
Trasseci lombra del primo parente,
Abraàm patrïarca e Davìd re,
e altri molti, e feceli beati.
Non lasciavam landar perch ei dicessi,
Non era lunga ancor la nostra via
Di lungi neravamo ancora un poco,70
«O tu chonori scïenzïa e arte,
E quelli a me: «Lonrata nominanza
Intanto voce fu per me udita:
Poi che la voce fu restata e queta,
Lo buon maestro cominciò a dire:
quelli è Omero poeta sovrano;
Però che ciascun meco si convene
Così vid i adunar la bella scola
Da chebber ragionato insieme alquanto,
e più donore ancora assai mi fenno,100
Così andammo infino a la lumera,
Venimmo al piè dun nobile castello,
Questo passammo come terra dura;
Genti veran con occhi tardi e gravi,
Traemmoci così da lun de canti,
Colà diritto, sovra l verde smalto,
I vidi Eletra con molti compagni,
Vidi Cammilla e la Pantasilea;

Broke the deep lethargy within my head A heavy thunder, so that I upstarted, Like to a person who by force is wakened;
And round about I moved my rested eyes,
True is it, that upon the verge I found me
Obscure, profound it was, and nebulous,10
"Let us descend now into the blind world,"
And I, who of his colour was aware,
And he to me: "The anguish of the people
Let us go on, for the long way impels us."
There, as it seemed to me from listening,
And this arose from sorrow without torment,
To me the Master good: "Thou dost not ask
That they sinned not; and if they merit had,
And if they were before Christianity,
For such defects, and not for other guilt,40
Great grief seized on my heart when this I heard,
"Tell me, my Master, tell me, thou my Lord,"
"Came any one by his own merit hence,
Replied: "I was a novice in this state,
Hence he drew forth the shade of the First Parent,
Abraham, patriarch, and David, king,
And others many, and he made them blessed;
We ceased not to advance because he spake,
Not very far as yet our way had gone
We were a little distant from it still,70
"O thou who honourest every art and science,
And he to me: "The honourable name,
In the mean time a voice was heard by me:
After the voice had ceased and quiet was,
To say to me began my gracious Master:
That one is Homer, Poet sovereign;
Because to each of these with me applies
Thus I beheld assemble the fair school
When they together had discoursed somewhat,
And more of honour still, much more, they did me,100
Thus we went on as far as to the light,
We came unto a noble castle's foot,
This we passed over even as firm ground;
People were there with solemn eyes and slow,
Thus we withdrew ourselves upon one side
There opposite, upon the green enamel,
I saw Electra with companions many,
I saw Camilla and Penthesilea
I saw that Brutus who drove Tarquin forth,
When I had lifted up my brows a little,130
All gaze upon him, and all do him honour.
Democritus, who puts the world on chance,
Of qualities I saw the good collector,
Euclid, geometrician, and Ptolemy,
I cannot all of them pourtray in full,
The sixfold company in two divides; And to a place I come where nothing shines.
