Last week Andrea Bocelli, the darkly handsome tenor who sings everything from arias to pop songs, had an unusual audition: He sang for Pope John Paul II.
Mr. Bocelli - whose duet "Time To Say Goodbye" with the soprano Sarah Brightman has sold more than a million copies worldwide - performed the "Hymn of the 2000 Holy Year" at the Pope's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo. The hymn is expected to be performed publicly in December to usher in the Holy Year.
1999 - Year of Andrea Bocelli
Opera's newest pop star and the so-called "fourth tenor" got his first big break in 1992 when he recorded "Miserere" with the Italian rock star Zucchero Fornaciari, who had actually written the music for Luciano Pavarotti. After major international chart success with single and album releases, the cross-over star this year alone performed "The Prayer" with Celine Dion at the Oscars, won a Golden Globe for the same song, announced the "Three Divas and a Tenor" world tour with Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand and Whitney Houston, and will headline at the Party of The Century in New York City.
