Una Bella Spaghettata
Wednesday November 19, 2008
Certain Italian words and phrases capture the unique essence of the culture like no other. Spaghettata—spaghetti dinner—is one of them. Typically, it's an impromptu meal thrown together when friends drop by unexpectedly, or a late-night dish quickly prepared after returning home from the movies or theater. It's meant to be a no-fuss spontaneous repast, with a high degree of conviviality. Just boil water for the spaghetti, make a quick sauce such as spaghetti aglio e olio, and in just a few minutes, a delicious bowl of spaghetti is ready to be twirled.

an italian couple were in the USA on surgical training a few years ago…they became my friends & whenever we came back from an outing at the end of the day, the wife would always invite me to stay to eat dinner w/ them. she said, “mangiamo quello che ce”. it was always a hastily but well prepared, delicious platter of spaghetti. she prepared a salad & we had good hearty bread & fruit & cheese & of course a fine wine. i used to think, “man, ‘whatever they had’ was princely”!
best wishes to my fellow bloggers…marianna
