No, It's Not "Fresch"

Saturday November 15, 2008

Brand naming consultants frequently mangle Italian words and Italian pronunciation beyond all recognition. Case in point is Freschetta pizza. This contrived pseudo-Italian term is not only mispronounced "fresh-SHETT-a" in commercials, the marketing slogan reads: "Now That's Fresch"—which further confuses the issue and compounds the error. Given the influence that advertising has on consumers, it's no wonder that Americans have such a hard time pronouncing Italian words that include the consonant combination CH.

And it's not even "fresch." It's frozen pizza!

My pet peeve in this category is “pinot grigio,” invariably mispronounced with a 3-syllable “gree-zhee-oh,” instead of the correct, 2-syllable “gree-jo.”

Seems Italian is pronounced either like Spanish or French, but never like Italian!
