Talk (Italian) With Your Mouth Full

Friday November 14, 2008

Growing up you were told not to talk with your mouth full. An Italian language school in New York City, though, is offering a good reason to open wide while eating cannelloni croccanti di mozzarella e ricotta di bufala con passata di pomodoro (crispy cannelloni stuffed with buffalo mozzarella and ricotta in a light tomato sauce). Collina Italiana is conducting a program titled: Parla Come Mangi, a monthly sit-down dinner at a local restaurant in which a language teacher facilitates discussion entirely in Italian focusing on specific themes, depending on participants’ levels. In addition, the restaurant owners, chef, and staff address the group entirely in Italian for an evening of Italian language immersion.

Grazie per la suggestione.

I went to the dinner at Alloro along with about 30 others and had a fantastic meal. The teacher, Laura, got conversation rolling about the menu and introductions. What fun!

I wanted to try to speak more Italian but some who attended weren’t really students of the language. So, in the future, they will have dinners for absolute beginners and for those more advanced in language skills.
