Witty Word Play at the Supermercato

Sunday September 14, 2008

English has encroached on Italian culture and language for many years now, and nowhere is that more evident than in the witty word play used in Italian marketing. In addition to advertising, Italian companies are even using English terms when naming their firms. Case in point is Eataly, a sprawling food market in Torino. At "The Supermarket of the Future" shoppers can "...choose fresh fish from beautiful arrays on curvy banks of ice, or beef from rare breeds prized for their meat, raised on nearby farms."

Il più grande mercato di cibi di alta qualità is also planning a location in the U.S. According to The New York Times, in an article titled "Spacious Food Bazaar in Turin Plans Manhattan Branch," the Italian megastore would be situated in a building directly across from Rockefeller Center, practically within view of the annual Christmas tree.
