Il Neologismo della Settimana

Sunday August 24, 2008
A recent "neologism of the week" (newly coined word or phrase) featured in Il Grande Dizionario Garzanti di Italiano 2009 is the word biorisanare. The transitive verb, a combination of the prefix bio- (in this case, referring to organically produced, or otherwise environmentally friendly) and risanare (to reclaim, redevelop, to turn around) has two meanings: 1) to reclaim or redevelop using techniques that respect the environment (biorisanare un territorio, uno spazio urbano); and 2) combat the noxious effects of pollution in an agricultural zone using environmentally friendly methods.
