Along with other Italian words commonly found in the American English vocabulary such as paparazzi, pasta, and pizza there's now prosecco. It will be included with other "new words and phrases that have successfully become part of the mainstream English language through prolonged and widespread usage in a variety of publications," such as edamame, mondegreen, and norovirus, in the 2008 print update of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
Defined as "a sparkling Italian wine" (vino italiano con le bollicine), prosecco is made from a variety of white grape of the same name grown in the Veneto region of Italy.
