Englishisms and Dialect in New Zingarelli Dictionary

Thursday October 13, 2005
Among the 700 new entries in this year's Zanichelli dictionary there are many Englishisms, some of which are very recent, such as "embedded" and "chick lit," both from 2003.

According to the Agenzia Giornalistica Italiana, "the Italian language is becoming ever more suspended between exasperated modernization ('kiteski' - a sport consisting of being pulled along in skis by a kite, from 2003) and dialect (this year the Sicilian exclamation "mizzica" is added). But among the 10,500 citations there is space for contemporary authors: 'ominicchio' (mediocre man, uomo mediocre) coined by Sciascia and montarozzo (heap of earth, debris, and refuse) by Pasolini. In total the dictionary counts 135,000 entries with 370,000 different meantings, some from the world of politics, or created from globalization like 'global', 'equosolidale', 'altermondista" and 'fund-raising'."
