Italian Nicknames

Tuesday September 27, 2005
Anyone know a Rino, Dado, or Daddo (all possible nicknames in Italian for Rinaldo)? How about a Lino (which could be a diminutive for Nicola, Michele, Gabriele, Raffaele, and even Paolo)? And what about a Mimmo? (short for Domenico.) There's a nickname, diminutive, or short form for every Italian name.

As an About Italian Language forum member points out, though, there is no single short form for the various Italian names. There are, however, a few typical ways of deriving nicknames from longer names.
