Lost Italian Dialect?

Tuesday July 19, 2005
Switzerland has four official languages - German, French, Italian(!), and Romansh. According to swissinfo, Romansh, like its Italian "cousins" Ladino (not to be confused with the Judeo-Spanish language of the same name) and Friulano, developed in the Alpine region, when Latin was grafted on to the long-forgotten Rhaetian language. There's an ongoing effort in Switzerland to promote and preserve minority languages, such as Romansh, and to respect the cultural and historical background of the communities that speak those languages.
