Regata delle Befane
Tuesday January 4, 2005
Imagine five mature men dressed as La Befana rowing boats on the Grand Canal in Venice and you have an idea of what takes place on January 6, the feast of the Epiphany, in the Italian town nicknamed La Serenissima.
The Regata delle Befane is a traditional boat race that takes place every year to kick off the multitude of regattas, feasts, and special events scheduled in the city. The serious competition requires that the oarsmen pilot the mascareta, the name for a type of boat with only one oar that means 'little mask'.
