The Pope's Christmas Card

Monday December 27, 2004
Each year during the Christmas Eve midnight Mass in St. Peter's Basilica the pope delivers a homily in Italian and several other languages. The message, called 'Urbi et Orbi' in Latin, means ''to the city and to the world'' - because the Pope is the Catholic bishop and patriarch of Rome, and head of Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Catholic Churches.

The pope's Christmas card reads: "Buon Natale ai romani e agli abitanti dell’intera Nazione italiana! Auguro che il messaggio natalizio di amore e di pace diventi, per i singoli e per le famiglie, fonte di rinnovamento interiore e di autentico progresso sociale. Buon Natale!"
