In Thanks to RAI Italians Speak Italian the Agenzia Giornalistica Italia reports that, during his annual New Year's Eve speech the President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, applauded RAI (the Italian public television broadcaster) for it's educational value: "Thanks to its role in the unification of the country; it gave a common language to all Italians even though not appreciated by the purists."

Another reason to ask your cable company to carry RAI.
