Impeach Berlusconi?
Sunday July 13, 2003
Save Democracy has begun an initiative to petition the European Parliament to compel Italy to "comply with the values of the European Union." Specifically, they are "particularly concerned about the infringement of media pluralism in Italy and its potential impact on Europe" given that Silvio Berlusconi, the current prime minister, controls 90% of the television airwaves, thus "failing to ensure the media pluralism necessary for a functioning democracy."
A quick primer on the state of Italian media today: Berlusconi, the richest man in Italy, owns Fininvest. This company directly owns the largest group of private nationwide broadcasting channels (Canale 5 , Italia 1 and Rete 4). These three channels - together with the public channels (RAI) gather 90.2% of the total television audience. Read the petition in English or Italian.
